An Ethics Seal for blogs

Geek alert! I’m at the Online News Association Conference in DC, so this post is all about shoptalk.

Calling for an Ethic Seal for blogs and news sites at the Ethics Panel. Seems like a good idea, mostly about transparency. After all, disclosure is sort of like part of the first aid kit in journalism ethics. If I understood it correctly, the seal would link to a page similar to those of the Creative Commons copyright policies.  You will be able to make it clear when it comes to how you report, how you fact-check, and so on. This would be something that bloggers and news sites would post on their own–no policing.

Sounds a little bit like the purity rings that caused so much controversy at the MTV awards last week… you know, those that some teens are now sporting as a symbol of their promise of not having sex before marriage. The Seal may be an honorable thing to do, too, although it may be as symbolic as some of those rings, with the bearer not always being able to own up to the promise.

See more here and feel free to post your thoughts below or in the Wall (right-hand column).
